Advocacy group targets Ga. child services division

ATLANTA (AP) An advocacy group wants a federal judge to find a Georgia agency in contempt of meeting court-ordered requirements to find permanent homes for abused and neglected children.

The motion filed Tuesday by Children's Rights asserts that the Division of Family and Children Services has failed to meet key requirements of a settlement reached in 2005. That case was brought on behalf of 2,000 children in foster care in Atlanta.

The advocates contend the state has failed to provide permanent homes for children in state custody for years. They also contend the agency has failed to make even modest reductions in the system's growing backlog of foster children.

State officials did not immediately return a phone call.
