ATLANTA -- It may not happen very often, but Barry Zito threw seven scoreless innings to help the Giants grab a 5-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Monday. The Giants jumped on Jorge Campillo for a three-run first inning. Aaron Rowand's sacrifice fly and a pair of run-scoring singles by Rich Aurilia and Pablo Sandoval gave Zito a 3-0 lead to work with. Zito (7-15) threw more like the former Cy Young winner who signed a lucritive seven-year contract prior to last season, limting the Braves to just five hits over seven innings. Rowand struck again in the sixth inning, connecting for his 12th homer of the season and extending the San Francisco advantage to 4-0. An errant throw by Brian McCann in the seventh cost Atlanta another run. With runners on first and second, Campillo issued a walk to Dave Roberts, but McCann lost track of the count and attempted to throw out the runner advancing to third on ball four. This allowed Emmanuel Burriss to scamper home and make it 5-0. Campillo (7-6) was roughed up for five runs on seven hits in six and two thirds innings on the afternoon. It's the second straight start in which Campillo has yielded five runs. The Braves best scoring chance came undone in the bottom of the eighth, when McCann hit a potential double down the line that richocheted off first base umpire Ted Barrett with a man aboard. Chipper Jones was forced to stop at third and was stranded there when the inning ended. Atlanta's seven game homestand could not have gone much worse, with just one win and six defeats. The losses send the Braves 13 games under .500 with a 56-69 record on the season. On Deck:The Braves will begin a two city roadtrip with a visit to Shea Stadium and a three game set against the New York Mets starting Tuesday. Jo-Jo Reyes will return from the minors to take on Oliver Perez in the opener. Game time is set for 7:10 PM EST.

ATLANTA -- Giants ace Tim Lincecum was every bit as good as advertised on Sunday. The slightly built flame throwing righty allowed just one run in seven and two thirds innings and struck out 10 Atlanta Braves as the San Francisco Giants held on for a 3-1 victory. Showcasing his mid-90's fastball and nasty breaking pitches, Lincecum (13-3) carved up the Braves and allowed just three hits on the afternoon. The 10 punch-outs give Lincecum a Major League leading 192 for the season. Lincecum departed with two outs in the eighth, but Atlanta scratched out a run when Mark Kotsay dropped a run-scoring single into centerfield off Jack Taschner to plate Escobar with Atlanta's first and only run. Travis Ishikawa put the Giants on the board in the second inning, belting a two-run homer off Braves starter Charlie Morton that would give Lincecum all the run support he would need. San Francisco added another run in the fifth when Emmanuel Burriss singled home Randy Winn. Morton (3-7) has yet to record a victory at Turner Field but rebounded from a rough start against the Chicago Cubs his last time out. All three Giants runs were charged to Morton over six innings of work. Atlanta's homestand has not gone according to plan, as opponents have been victorious in five of the six contests thus far and outscored Atlanta 42-22 in that time. On Deck:Atlanta will send Jorge Campillo to the mound as they seek to split the four-game series. The Giants will counter with left-hander Barry Zito. Game time is set for 4:30 PM EST.

ATLANTA -- A year of adjustments is starting to pay off for Jeff Francoeur. The Braves right fielder continued his good hitting of late with a 4-for-5 night at the plate in to help Atlanta snap a five-game losing streak with an 11-5 win over the San Francisco Giants on Friday. No one has been more frustrated at the nearly season-long slump than Francoeur, who has gone to a toe-tap timing approach that he credits with his recent success. Wth seven hits in his last 14 at-bats, Francoeur has pushed his average up from .224 to .233 in a three game span. The Braves pounded Giants rookie Matt Palmer (0-1) for seven runs in just two and a third innings in his Major League debut. After a two-run second gave the Braves their first lead of the homestand, the Braves scored four times in the third to open up a 6-0 advantage. Francoeur contributed a pair of RBI's in the offensive onslaught. Mike Hampton (2-1) allowed just two runs in six innings to pick up his second victory of the season. A 9-2 cushion allowed manager Bobby Cox to pull Hampton after just 88 pitches. Getting a rare start at first base, Greg Norton drew a pair of walks and belted his fourth homer of the season. Casey Kotchman, battling flu-like symptons was given the night off but late came on to pinch-hit. Omar Infante scored twice and contributed two hits and a pair of RBI's, as every Braves starter recorded at least one safety. Seven Braves drove in at least one run on the evening. On Deck:The Braves will do battle against one of the National Leagues brightest young hurlers, in Tim Lincecum on Sunday. Charlie Morton will take the mound for Atlanta. Game time is set for 1:30 PM EST.

ATLANTA -- A disastrous homestand continued on Friday at Turner Field, as the Atlanta Braves squandered a quality start by Jair Jurrjens in a 5-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants. Jurrjens (11-8) gave the Braves their best performance by a starting pitcher thus far on the homestand. In seven innings of work, Jurrjens allowed just two runs on eight hits while striking out nine. San Francisco had plenty to boast about in the starting department as well. Matt Cain (8-9) surrendered just one run on six hits and struck out five to pick up the win. The lone Braves run came in the bottom of the sixth, as Chipper Jones laced an RBI-single that chased home Mark Kotsay and made it a 2-1 game. Just one night after hitting for the cycle as part of a five-hit game, Kotsay went 2-for-4 in a losing cause. On Deck:The series continues on Saturday as the Braves send Mike Hampton to the mound to do battle with young strike out artist Jonathan Sanchez of the Giants. Game time is set for 7:10 PM EST.
Glavine lands back on disabled list
Friday 08-15-2008 8:02pm ET
ATLANTA -- The return of Tom Glavine last just one start, as the Atlanta Braves had to place their veteran hurler back on the 15-day disabled list on Friday. Attempting to avoid surgery for a partial tear of the flexor tendon in his left elbow, Glavine experienced more discomfort in his start against the Cubs on Thursday.
Chicago tagged Glavine for seven runs on as many hits and four walks in a brief four inning return outing in an 11-7 Braves loss on Thursday. The move was announced prior to Atlanta's game against the San Fracisco Giants on Friday.
Glavine, 42, missed more than two months after he felt pain in his elbow in a June 10 start against the Cubs at Wrigley Field. A battery of tests revealed a slight tear in the tendon, but doctors advised Glavine that he could attempt to rehab and let it heal on its own rather than undergo a potentially season-ending surgery.
Atlanta's starting rotation has been decimated by injuries all season, beginning with John Smoltz, who was shut down for the season after surgery on his ailing shoulder in May. Mike Hampton did not make his first start of the season until July 26, but that came just days before Tim Hudson would be lost to Tommy John surgery until 2009.
In 13 starts this season, Glavine has gone 2-4 with a 5.54 ERA. Much of the damage can be attributed to poor outings against the Cubs, who tagged losses on Glavine by pounding out 11 runs on 13 hits and eight walks in his two starts against them this season.
The Braves purchased the contract of right-hander Matt DeSalvo from Triple-A Richmond. DeSalvo, 27, spent time with the New York Yankees last season, going 1-3 with a 6.18 ERA in seven appearances - six starts. Pitching mostly in relief for Richmond this season, DeSalvo is 2-11 with a 4.60 ERA and 90 strikeouts in 88.1 innings.
With just six weeks remaining, it is unclear whether or not Glavine will return before the end of the season.
